Why journalism students who learn about business could have an edge

John Thomas of Quill Magazine spoke with Quinnipiac College College of Communications dean Chris Roush about his new reserve, “The Future of Small business Journalism: Why it Matters for Wall Street and Main Road.”

Even now, you recommend that journalists who discover about enterprise could have an edge in the market.

Part of the difficulty is, for most company journalists who are coming into journalism, they are not coming into the discipline with any instruction or awareness, mainly because faculties and universities are not education college students to be company journalists. They’re instruction them to deal with sports activities, metropolis corridor and so forth. Only about a dozen colleges teach small business journalism with any rigor. 

You know, the learners who are journalism majors for the most part are pretty passionate about the discipline. They want to improve the entire world, they want to act as a watchdog for modern society. I still see that. For me that has not changed in journalism in the past 100 many years. What younger journalists could do improved is, I feel, that they do not realize the want to truly focus and to produce a niche, due to the fact that is what is taking place throughout all types of media.

I had a college student previous spring who took the company reporting class I taught listed here at Quinnipiac, I could see in the course of the semester his eyes acquiring wider and wider and wider. And he arrived to me and said, “I’m graduating. I’m heading to be hunting for a job. I assume this is what I’m heading to do.” It shouldn’t be your final semester in college or university that you comprehend, “Hey, I have to have to specialize.”
